BEFORE YOUR FIRST DECISION

Robotics glossary: from autonomy to ownership costs

Terms used when choosing humanoids: autonomy, teleoperation, SDK, degrees of freedom, TCO, SLA and parts compatibility.

Autonomy

Performing a specified task without continuous human control within defined conditions. Always ask about operating limits and intervention frequency.

Teleoperation

Remote control of a robot by an operator. It can support demonstrations or exception handling, but human time must be included in costs and measurements.

SDK / EDU

An SDK is a software development kit. EDU is a variant label used by some manufacturers. The actual access scope must be checked for the specific configuration.

Degrees of freedom / DoF

The number of independent motions of a mechanism. More degrees of freedom do not automatically mean better grasping, greater payload or better task performance.

TCO — total cost of ownership

Hardware and operating costs over a defined period. For a robot, include deployment, financing, licences, operation, parts, energy and downtime; avoid counting the same item twice.

SLA — service level agreement

Agreed, measurable support terms. Initial response, diagnosis and restoration times are different measures; the agreement should define their scope and calculation.

Parts compatibility

A component’s suitability for a specific hardware and software version. It covers more than dimensions: electrical parameters, control, installation and required calibration also matter.
